The Life You Save May Be Your Own.
When you start to read “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” you quickly learn that the characters are very selfish. You have the old woman and her mentally handicap daughter and then you have Mr. Shiftlet who just happens to stroll into town. All the mother wants is to find a man that will marry her daughter so that she can have someone do all the chores and little things around her property. She sees Mr. Shiftlet who she barely knows and suckers him into it. But there is also the fact that Mr. Shiftlet happens to see a car that the old woman owns and he figures he can sucker her into letting him have it. In my opinion both the old lady and Mr. Shiftlet are both cons. They knew how to play off of eachother to get what they wanted. The only innocent person in the whole story was the daughter, who didnt’ even know what was going on. My philosophy is that Mr. Shiftlet was a stalker. Even though in the story it doesn’t say that I believe he was. How else would he know that the old woman had a car that she didnt’ really use, or where she lived and you know he had to plan out leaving the daughter after they got married. He didn’t even care about the wedding and he made sure the old woman knew it. In the end I guess he won his little game. The old woman was left at home with no daughter or son -in-law to do things for her. The daughter is hundreds of miles away from home and he got the car.
